What each form covers

AS9102 splits a first article inspection report across three forms. All three are required for a full FAI, and a customer will reject a package that is missing one.

Form 1Part number accountability

Identifies the part, the drawing and the revision the report was run against, plus who verified and approved it. This is the form that says which part this package belongs to.

Form 2Product accountability

Materials, special processes and functional testing, each with its specification and the certificate that proves conformance. Leave a block empty when it does not apply to the part.

Form 3Characteristic accountability

One row per ballooned characteristic: where it sits on the drawing, what the drawing requires, and what you measured. This is the form that takes the time.

Why nothing uploads

Everything you type stays in the browser tab. There is no server to send it to. The report is produced by your browser's own print dialog, so a drawing number or a customer part number never leaves the machine you are sitting at.

That matters more in this industry than most. Part numbers and drawing revisions are frequently export-controlled, and pasting them into a hosted tool is a conversation with your ITAR or CMMC scope that most shops would rather not have. It also means you can keep a draft going with no account and no subscription.

Common questions

Is this really free?

Yes, with no email required and no export limit. It stays that way.

Where does my draft live?

In this browser, on this machine. It survives a refresh or a closed tab. It does not follow you to another computer, and clearing your browser data removes it.

Can I get my characteristics in without typing them?

Paste them. Select the cells in Excel or Sheets, copy, and paste into the Form 3 panel. You tell the builder what each column holds and it creates the rows.

Does it balloon my drawing?

No. This builder takes a characteristic list you already have and turns it into a conformant report. Producing that list from the print in the first place is the harder job, and it is what ctrlPlanner does: balloon the drawing once, and the FAI report is generated from the plan instead of typed out.

How to fill out an AS9102 first article inspection report

What AS9102 asks for

AS9102 is the SAE standard for first article inspection in aerospace. It defines three forms, and a complete FAIR is all three: Form 1 identifies the part and records the accountability of the whole report; Form 2 lists the raw material, special processes and functional testing, with the certifications behind each; Form 3 is the characteristic-by-characteristic results table, where every ballooned feature on the drawing gets a row showing the requirement, the actual measurement, and the method used to take it.

The current revision is Rev C. It is prescriptive about field content and less prescriptive about layout, which is why so many shops keep a spreadsheet, and why so many of those spreadsheets quietly drift out of conformance when someone adds a column.

What this free tool does

It builds all three forms in your browser. Enter the part details, paste your characteristics from a spreadsheet, record the results, and print to PDF. There is no account, nothing to install, and no upload. The page has no server to upload to, so your drawing numbers and characteristics stay on your machine.

It is deliberately a complete tool rather than a teaser. If the FAIR is all you need, this is all you need.

When you need more than a report

A FAIR is the output of a process. If you are producing them from a drawing every time, the work before the report is where the hours actually go: ballooning the print, deciding which operation holds which tolerance, walking the finished-part limits back through plating and grinding so each station knows what it has to hold. That is what ctrlPlanner does, and its AS9102 forms come out of data already entered rather than being typed a second time.

Common questions

Do I need all three AS9102 forms?

For a full FAIR, yes. A partial FAIR may use fewer, but Form 1 always records what the report covers and what it supplements.

What is the difference between a full and a partial FAIR?

A full FAIR covers every characteristic. A partial covers only what changed (a drawing revision, a process change, a new source) and references the full FAIR it builds on.

When does a first article need re-doing?

A design change affecting fit, form or function; a manufacturing process, source or location change; a lapse of two years in production; and a change of the natural or legal person responsible for the part.

Does this tool store my drawings?

No. It runs entirely in your browser, there is no server component, and nothing is transmitted. Close the tab and it is gone.

Is it really free?

Yes, and it stays free. It is a complete AS9102 report builder with no account and no limit.
